Reunion 50 Has a Venue

updateWe hope all of you are staying safe during these unprecedented times. It’s been a while since our last update but the team has been hard at work visiting venues and negotiating a contract and we are happy to announce that we have a date and have booked a venue for our 50th Reunion Celebration!

Our Reunion Team put a lot of thought and effort into choosing a venue and date to celebrate our 50th Reunion. We want to thank all of you who gave us input and suggestions through our surveys and emails as they helped us in our selection. Some of the criteria the team considered in making a selection:

  1. A location that is centrally located for everyone’s convenience and not too far from an airport for those flying to NJ.
  2. A venue that has a 4 Star rating with a Hotel, Restaurant and Bar on-site and a banquet room that could accommodate at least 250 people for a buffet-style event.
  3. A reasonable price point for the event and hotel rooms to mitigate cost being a major factor in attendance.
  4. A date that avoids peak vacation time, holidays and major inclement weather months. We considered October to be the best month, but who knew that October is now the most popular month for weddings. But autumn in NJ is generally warm with crisp night air and the occasional last fling of warmer days.

The Reunion Team’s Venue Selection Sub Team was led by Laura Krampetz Mueller and guided by the above criteria. The selection process was intensive and included multiple site visits. After looking at a group of possible venue locations and feeling less than completely satisfied, we were thrilled when Vita Venturi Stohler came across a new location which turned out to meet all our criteria. It is a beautiful contemporary facility in an amazingly convenient location and we have booked it for Reunion 50+ to Saturday, October 1, 2022.

Our Reunion celebration will be held at the APA Hotel in Woodbridge. It is right off of exit 131 of the Garden State Parkway, about 2 miles from the NJ Turnpike, within walking distance to the Metropark Station, 12 miles from Newark International Airport and 14 miles from IHS.

What’s Next?

  • SAVE the DATE – block out your calendar for Saturday, October 9th, 2021.
  • Mike Emanuele sent out an Excel and Word document with an updated class list in his recent email which includes email addresses (if we have them) and the indications classmates gave us as to whether or not they were likely to attend the Reunion and planning to bring a guest.
Please review the list to make sure your information (email address, Reunion Attendance, etc.) is correct. If it needs to be updated let us know at ihsclassof1971@gmail.com
Look over the list to see if you have contact information for any of our missing classmates. We could really use your help here – perhaps this will help you pass any idle time you have if you are confined to your home.
  • The Reunion team will start working on further the planning of the event including the final pricing for the event.
  • Any further thoughts about the event? Let us know!
  • GET EXCITED and get others excited too. Go through your old photos or keepsakes and post them on Facebook. If you are not on Facebook, send them to the class email address and we will post them here and on Facebook.
  • This website will be updated with additional information, such as price, how to register etc.

Reunion Team’s Update for November 2019

updateMike Emanuele emailed this update on the Reunion based on our survey results. (If you didn’t get the mail, you’re probably not on the class email list. Send your info to us at ihsclassof1971@gmail.com)

As of now, we have 144 classmates indicating they intend to come to our reunion and they would bring 48 guests (194 total).  An additional 46 classmates have indicated they may be coming to the reunion and if they do they will bring 17 guests (63 maybes).   So, we could potentially have 257 people at our reunion or even more as we are still finding people and still haven’t heard from quite a number of you.   A list of those who plan to attend or are maybes is at the bottom of this email.

The reunion team would like to thank all of you who took the time to submit a survey. Your input has been very valuable to us and is giving us some direction in our planning.   Here are the actual numbers:

Our thought is to have the reunion on a weekend in October of 2021 – this avoids conflicts with holidays, heavy vacation times and inclement weather.

We are looking to have it at or within walking distance of a hotel that has both a bar and a restaurant.   We are thinking that there could be an informal meetup at the hotel bar on Friday night for those interested and who live close enough to the hotel or who might be traveling from a distance and would want to stay at the hotel on Friday night.

Some of you have expressed an interest in touring the High School and we have contact information for Dr. Hackett who is the Superintendent of Schools.  Once we have a firm date we will contact her and ask for permission to tour the school on the morning of the Saturday of the reunion event.

On Sunday morning anyone interested can again informally meet up for breakfast or brunch at the hotel restaurant before heading back home.

Friday night and Sunday morning is also an opportunity to organize an informal elementary school reunion.

Now that you have given us our marching orders, the team is researching venues to see what we can book that allows us to achieve the above at an affordable price.   We also intend to negotiate a reduced room rate for anyone wanting to stay at the hotel.

If you have any questions feel free to email the team at ihsclassof1971@gmail.com.    As soon as we book a venue, we will let you all know the date and location so you can mark it in your calendars, make travel arrangements, etc.

Survey Comments

surveyThe Reunion Team sent out two surveys and received almost 200 responses from the class. The surveys were very useful to gauge your feelings about reunion plans such as food, drinks, music and most importantly how many of you plan to attend and perhaps bring a guest.

Here is an aggregated summary of the comments people included in their responses. If someone responded as a MAYBE on attending, we asked what would encourage or discourage attending.

  1. My health in October 2021!
  2. It’s two years away… difficult to plan anything that far ahead
  3. Can’t commit this far out
  4. Live out of state (common response)
  5. Depends on my schedule then
  6. Need to know the actual date
  7. Depends on weekend & month of reunion
  8. More likely if I know who else was attending
  9. The venue
  10. Hold it in central Jersey
  11. Cost (especially if I considered bring my spouse)
  12. Total cost including travel and hotel
  13. Travel distance – I would prefer less than 25 miles from home
  14. Need it to be in or very near a hotel
  15. Can we get a tour of IHS?
  16. I would want it to be less formal (no open bar, no sitdown dinner, casual dress etc.)
  17. Have a DJ or recorded music & music from our high school years  (no band)
  18. What about a dinner cruise on the Hudson?
  19. Make sure there are name tags with yearbook photos
  20. I’d like to see semi-formal dress code.
  21. Plan for people coming in the night before get together and even the morning after
